Announcing the Spring Yoga Therapy Today
Inside you will find an inspiring feature article on teaching yoga to veterans,
a fascinating interview on teaching yoga in prison, and thoughtful responses to
the “great yoga debate” started by Broad’s NY Times article. Two teachers
present alternative perspectives on the minimum hours required in the proposed
standards… and much more. Enjoy!

New IAYT Videos!
IAYT now has two inspiring short videos by filmmaker Bob Belinoff of Digital
Wkshop (
digitalwkshop.com).
An
Introduction to IAYT spotlights some of our contributions to the field
of Yoga therapy and healthcare.
IAYT: Scenes
from SYR 2010 and Invitation to SYR 2011 at Kripalu also features IAYT’s
mission but with an emphasis on our recent research conference, the Symposium of
Yoga Research (SYR), which took place at the Himalayan Institute in Honesdale,
PA, in October 2010, and an invitation to the next SYR at the Kripalu Center for
Yoga & Health in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts in September this year.
We hope that you will take a look and we encourage you to share these with
friends and colleagues who are interested in IAYT and our mission.

IAYT, NAMA and YA Announce
"An Overview of Regulatory Issues for Yoga, Yoga Therapy, and Ayurveda" by
Daniel Seitz, JD, EdD.
This is an invited paper forthcoming in the 2010 International Journal of
Yoga Therapy.
We are publishing this early because of the current work of the IAYT
Educational Standards Committee and hence the timeliness of this article.
Financial support for the research and writing of this article was provided
by IAYT, the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) and Yoga Alliance
(YA). The purpose is to serve our common goal of well-informed communication and
decisions in this complicated and challenging area. Free access to all is
provided as a public service.

The IAYT Educational Standards Committee
This committee, chosen from volunteers from IAYT Member schools, is
charged with developing recommendations to the IAYT Board about entry level
standards for the training of Yoga Therapists and related issues. Preliminary
recommendations are due by July, 2011 and final recommendations one year later.
Anyone may follow this, and IAYT members may contribute to this discussion on
IAYT's Digital Resources Library, in the Group, "Member Schools and the
Educational Standards Committee."

The 2011 Journal features reports of original research on how yoga can help
breast cancer survivors, patients with heart disease, veterans with PTSD. It
also includes practical guidelines for offering yoga to older adults,
individuals with fibromyalgia, and survivors of trauma, violence, and natural
disaster. Thought-provoking perspectives emphasize the importance of
collaboration with fields that may be viewed as "competition," and challenge the
field to consider ethical issues of offering yoga therapy to specific
populations. As always, you'll find articles that provide the information you
care about most: detailed information about yoga interventions, advice for
incorporating the full spectrum of yoga's healing practices, and in-depth
discussion of the evidence supporting each recommendation.

In this issue, you will find competing and exciting perspectives on teaching
yoga safely, sparked by the controversial New York Times article "How Yoga Can
Wreck Your body." Also included are two articles on the minimum hours specified
in IAYT's proposed standards for training yoga therapists--one advocating
graduated training levels and one arguing that it is imperative to keep the bar
high right at the outset--and an argument for an internship requirement. A
feature article explores the benefits—and hurdles—of teaching yoga to veterans,
and an interview sheds light on the experience teaching yoga to prison inmates.
Other highlights include our usual features such as Members News, a training
report, and Yoga Therapy for Daily Living. We also have an International
Spotlight featuring yoga therapy in Canada. Enjoy!
