IAYT's First Call for Nominations from the

Membership for the Board of Directors

IAYT is a 501(c)(3) professional organization with almost 2,300 members worldwide. We are growing rapidly in numbers, services, and leadership activities in our field. The IAYT Board of Directors is the governing board of the organization. IAYT has a small but experienced part-time professional staff.

We are seeking nominations for two Board positions. Nominees need to have vision, experience, and time to help lead our association and foster the development of the field.

Requirements

  • Experience in one or more of IAYT's major membership categories: Yoga teaching, Yoga therapy, healthcare, and research.
  • Ability to attend board meetings:
    a. Two weekend meetings in person, per year.
    b. Two telephone meetings per year.
  • Availability to participate in committee work and special projects.
  • Experience in one or more of IAYT's current or anticipated major program areas: publishing, professional conferences, continuing professional education, and working with professional training programs.
  • Experience in one or more other areas important to the association's operations: non-profit governance, professional association services, business management, legal, finance/accounting, information technology, and fundraising/grant-writing.

You may nominate a colleague or yourself. All nominees should send a letter of interest and CV to nominatingcommittee@iayt.org by May 1, 2008.  In your letter, it is helpful if you can speak directly to your experience, interest and skills in the last three items.  Please also be sure to provide your mailing address.

 Additional Notes and Details
  • Terms are for three years, and members are limited to two terms.
  • Currently, the board meets in person from 1 pm Friday thru noon on Sunday, the 3rd weekend of February and August.   Historically this has alternated between Los Angeles in February and San Anselmo (N. of San Francisco) in August, but this is subject to change as the geographic makeup of the board changes.
  • All reasonable expenses of attending board meeting are paid for by IAYT
  • Currently, the board also meets by phone the 3rd Wednesday of May and November for two hours at noon, PST.
  • It is difficult to estimate how much time committee and special projects will take, but this is reasonable and limited to the member's interest and ability.
  • A key requirement is that board members attend board meetings.    IAYT bylaws note that “any Director shall be removed automatically from office after two (2) consecutive absences from regular meetings of the Board of Directors.”  We do, however, make every effort to make it possible for board members to make the meetings.
  • Executive Directors note.  IAYT is blessed with an extraordinary and cooperative set of directors, united in service to the mission of IAYT, our members and the public.  Sometimes this is expressed as “plays well with others”.  In my view, this seems to well sum up some key intangibles.
  • Even if not selected to the board, your application and expression of interest may lead to other opportunities to serve IAYT's mission according to your interests and abilities and the evolving opportunities with IAYT.
