Final IAYT Code of Ethics and Supporting Documents
Ensuring responsible and ethical behavior on the part of yoga therapists and yoga therapy training programs—along with promoting high educational standards and effective and safe yoga therapy practice—is at the heart of establishing yoga as a recognized and respected therapy, one that is of service and benefit to the public.
Yoga therapists who are members of IAYT, including forthcoming IAYT-certified yoga therapists, must therefore be committed to responsible and ethical practice, to their own professional and personal growth, and to contributing to the growth and development of the field of yoga therapy.
At its February, 2016 meeting, the IAYT Board of Directors approved a comprehensive set of final policies that support responsible and ethical practice by providing specific guidelines and procedures. These final policies include:
These final policies are effective as of April 12, 2016. We are also planning educational activities for members in support of these policies and will continue to communicate regularly with our members to ensure that these policies are fully understood.
Note: All applicants for the forthcoming IAYT certification as a yoga therapist will be required to agree to and abide by the IAYT Code of Ethics, as well as IAYT’s other policies and procedures.
Please do not hesitate to contact the IAYT office if you have any questions.
IAYT gratefully acknowledges the exceptional Code of Ethics and supporting documents of the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). Much of IAYT’s language and structure was derived from their comprehensive and integrated set of policies. We also wish to acknowledge the influence of the solutions-oriented approach of the Yoga Australia grievance process. Last but not least we acknowledge the pioneering work and lasting impact of the California Yoga Teachers Association on their well-crafted Code of Professional Standards.
