My main focus is Yoga Therapy for Scoliosis & correcting musculo-skeletal imbalances. I work primarily with individuals in creating customized practices for their particular needs. I have a clientele with very diverse backgrounds & health issues; many of which come to me initially because of their physical pain.
Along with private yoga classes, I teach workshops & Therapeutic Mysore Classes. Mysore style is a group setting, though it is non led. Practitioners move & breathe at their own pace doing their own unique practice, while I move about the space working with each person individually as they need me. Mysore style is often associated with Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, though I do not limit my students to practice only those sequences. All traditions, practices, sequences & healing modalities are welcome in this setting; I am simply a facilitator & an aid to their unique practice.
Private classes start with postural assessment to become aware of which muscles are too strong/weak that are pulling their skeleton out of alignment & how this relationship is contributing to their pain/injuries. The tools I use to address the imbalances include self-massage, isolated muscle activations & somatic yoga as a precursor to asana. Gradually I introduce the practices of pranayama, visualizations, meditation, yoga nidra & sankalpa; to assist the practitioner in connecting with the deeper kosha's (layers of our being); so that their unique practice is holistic & all encompassing.
I began practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga at the age of 15 to avoid full spinal fusion for severe scoliosis. At the age of 20 I was guided to Mysore, India to study with Sri B.N.S. Iyengar, a direct student of Sri T. Krishnamacharya. He introduced me to the Kosha's, Yoga Philosophy, Pranayama & Full Body Hatha Yoga Mudras. Many of his teachings I continue to practice to this very day.
After some years I began to develop repetitive use injuries from doing very advanced asana with incorrect alignment for my personal physical imbalances. This is what led me to study Yoga Therapy with Integrative Yoga Therapy. I have completed their 300 hour modules & their additional 500 hour mentorship training; a combined total of 800 hour Yoga Therapy Training. My main take away from these in depth trainings has been Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology & really solidifying the Koshic Model in my awareness.
I regularly teach for free for individuals that cannot afford to pay; for Yoga in the Park, a local organization that has daily free yoga in city parks all across the state of Oklahoma; and I have taught at homeless shelters in the past. More work is currently being pursued to organize a weekly yoga class for at risk youths in my community.
