FAQS

How many CE hours do I need?
Current policy requires that you document at least 24 CE hours prior your IAYT recertification. Recertification occurs 3 years after date of approval. For example, if your C-IAYT was approved in August 2016, your recertification will be in August 2019. The next recertificaiton would be in August 2022. Requirements may change for future recertification cycles beyond the first.

Please review theRenewal and Continuing Education policy for more information about what can be submitted during this first recertification cycle.

To be eligible for C-IAYT recertification you must:
- Maintain your IAYT membership annually.
- Submit at least 24 hours of continued education within the 3 year period.
- Pass the IAYT Ethics and Scope of Practice Quiz (2 CE credits) - for first time C-IAYTs.
                           - Pass the IAYT Ethics and Scope of Practice training (2 CEs) for subsequent recertification.

How do I know what competency areas to assign to my continuing education?
It is left to your discretion to determine what the appropriate competency areas are for the training you are submitting. Review the IAYT Educational
Standards for the Training of Yoga Therapists (see Education>Professional Development>Educational Standards for CE).

Do courses have to be pre-approved by IAYT?

No. Under the current recertification policy, courses may be submitted for CE hours if they are aligned with one or more of the competency areas in the IAYT Educational Standards. The IAYT Approved Professional Development program lists courses for easy CE submission. In future years APD courses will be the most cost effective route for all CE submission. The current list of APD courses are available to see on our website. We expect this list to grow so keep checking back.
Courses that are not related to yoga therapy cannot be submitted for CE credit with the exception of CPR training which can be submitted for a maximum of 1 credit. Requirements may change for future recertification cycles.

Can CE hours obtained for another professional certification (e.g. licensed mental health counselor) or for registration with the Yoga Alliance be used to fulfill the IAYT CE requirement?
Yes, as long as the courses submitted for CE hours can be aligned with one or more of the IAYT Educational Standards
competency areas. Courses that do not relate directly to yoga therapy do not qualify for CE credit. An exception is CPR training which can be submitted for a maximum of 1 CE credit.

Can I get CEs for attending yoga therapy related conferences?
The easiest way to get CEs for attending a yoga therapy conference is to attend SYTAR or SYR.  Attendance at these awards 22 and 15 hours respectively and these credits are posted automatically to your profile after the conference.  (If you attended SYTAR or SYR prior to your C-IAYT award date, these credits will not count toward your 24 required hours).

If you attend a yoga therapy conference other than SYTAR or SYR during your valid 3 year C-IAYT award period you can submit the CEs yourself by determining the aligned competency areas and following the instructions under Education>Professional Development>Submitting Your CE Hours.

If I took yoga therapy related training, how do I know how many hours of the training will count for CE?
For this first cycle of recertification, 1 hour of training equals 1 hour of CE. It can be contact or non-contact hours. If your training provides you with something that designates the number of CE hours submit the number reflected on the program evidence. Requirements are subject to change for future recertification cycles and will be announced to IAYT certified therapists with sufficient time to complete requirements.

Do I have to complete an Approved Professional Development (APD) course?

In the future, APD courses will be the default route for CE submission.  Other hours will be submitted and reviewed before acceptance.  AT THIS TIME, CE hours are all acceptable as long as they are yoga therapy related and can be aligned to one or more of the competency areas in the Education Standards. Requirements will change for future recertification cycles.  Effective January 1, 2020 there will be a review fee for each non-APD continuing education submission.
